It started with a word: distance. The big question is what can you build with a word, how far can research go? For the 2nd semester project exhibition of the Media Technology Master program the task was to build an installation starting from one word. After doing research in every field we could imagine, we decided to deal with distance in relationships. After that the name of the project just popped: Love will tear us apart, inspired by the song of Joy Division. Love will tear us apart is an interactive floor installation. A computer triggers a perfect distance between the 2 players every now and then. The 2 players are bound to each other in a never ending dance. The goal is one: find this perfect distance. Upon that the rings projected on the floor (representing the 2 players) grow bigger, change color and become circles, the music gets smoother. A wrong move and everything is lost. 2 people never together never really apart. The distance between the players was calculated by motion/distance tracking with IR lights on the players’ headsets and a wii mote.Software used: Max/MSP, Adobe Air. The project was on display during July 2008 at V2 Institute for unstable media in Rotterdam and at NEST, in the Hague during the Museumnacht 2010. A project by Stelios Giannoulis and Bastiaan Terhorst for the Second Semester Project Exhibition of Media Technology.
